The doctor will Skype you now: new video explains how patients can have online appointment

A new video has been released which explains how patients in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire can now see their GP or nurse for a medical consultation - without leaving the comfort of their own home.

The exciting new programme allows people to discuss medical problems via Skype at a time and place to suit them, instead of going into the surgery. The programme is particularly useful for those patients in care homes, are housebound, or have childcare or caring issues. It is also suitable for people who find it difficult to get away from work during opening hours, or feel more comfortable discussing sensitive medical problems in the security of their home.

The video explains that telephone consultations limit what GPs and nurses can discuss, but using Skype allows the medical professional to see the patient. It is also safe and secure, although it is not intended to replace face-to-face consultations if they are needed.

The programme has the added benefit of taking pressure off GPs and nurses by enabling them to use their time more effectively and concentrate on more complex cases.

The Skype consultations are already proving very popular in the North Midlands. To watch the video, go to Vimeo, or ask your surgery or care home in Stoke-on-Trent or North Staffordshire for more details.
