New courses and resources to support the NHS Genomic Medicine Service

Through the NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS) in England, more healthcare professionals than ever before will be able to access genomic testing for their patients for the first time. To prepare the workforce for these tests and the impact their results will have, the Genomics Education Programme (GEP) has developed a series of supporting courses and resources to aid those who will use the service.

New child screening service to identify youngsters at risk of early heart disease

The Child-Parent Screening programme is a part of the nationally mandated AHSN AAC FH and Lipids Optimisation Programme and aims to identify families with Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) supporting the NHS Long Term Plan ambition to reduce Cardiovascular disease.

Genomic scale sequencing in clinical pathways is relatively cheap and fast. However, analysis of that sequence is slow, and interpretation of that analysis is still complex. These issues limit the utility of genomic sequence data in clinical practice. The Central and South Genomics Medicine Service would like to work with commercial innovators developing Artificial Intelligence solutions to these problems, with a view to supporting applications to Round 3 of the AI in Health and Care Awards.

Improving safety of medicines administration in a Birmingham Care Home

In March 2021 staff at Marian House Nursing Home embarked on a Quality Improvement (QI) initiative to improve the safer administration of medicines for residents in their home. Marian House Nursing Home is a 42 bedded care home in the Sutton Coldfield area of Birmingham that provides nursing and residential care led by the manager Jo Stinton.

University of Birmingham and Nonacus partner to develop urine test for bladder cancer

The University of Birmingham and Nonacus, a provider of genetic testing products for precision medicine and liquid biopsy, have partnered to develop a non-invasive test for bladder cancer. The test, which is expected to be available by mid-2022, will use highly sensitive liquid biopsy technology developed by Nonacus, and a panel of biomarkers validated by Dr Rik Bryan and Dr Douglas Ward from the University’s Bladder Cancer Research Centre, to diagnose the disease from urine samples.
