A Worcestershire great-grandmother, a young Star Wars fan and a Paralympic sprinter are just a few of the people benefitting from revolutionary goggles - the company behind which are being supported by WMAHSN – which featured in this week’s Sunday Times.
The goggles have been developed by GiveVision, a digital health start-up which is being supported by WMAHSN as part of its Serendip® digital health incubator. The Serendip® incubator covers almost 12,000 square feet of the new iCentrum® building in Birmingham and co-locates promising start-up businesses with large commercial partners, with the WMAHSN collaborating in the digital health quarter. Within this challenge-led incubator, WMAHSN helps to mentor qualifying early stage tech companies and provides accommodation, access to funding and practical advice.
GiveVision’s prototype goggles enable people with impaired vision to see again, and the three users in the article are part of a cohort of around 200 people who are involved in trialling the smartphone-based device. If successful, GiveVision hopes that the goggles will be approved for use on the NHS by 2015.
