Guest speaker: Fran Ives is a Chartered Ergonomics and Human Factors Specialist and spent time working in the automotive and nuclear industries before moving to healthcare in 2004. In addition to her current role as Innovation Project Manager at the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network, she leads the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) Midlands Regional Network Group and has been part of the CIEHF's Expert Panel during COVID-19.
What is Human Factors (HF)?
Also termed ergonomics, HF combines anatomy, physiology, psychology and biomechanics together with engineering, design and organisational management. By understanding humans and their interactions with tools and technology, tasks, environments and organisations, HF specialists apply theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimise human wellbeing and system performance.
In healthcare, HF is applied to investigations of serious incidents to 'move the focus of investigation from the acts or omissions of staff, to identifying the underlying causes of the incident’. HF principles inform the development of solutions that reduce the risk of the same incidents happening again'.
