Statistics for research using SPSS

23 May 2016 Training Room, Library, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, Mindelsohn Way, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TH

Learn to error check and improve the quality of your research data with guidance from an experienced statistician at the training event for staff and students at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). Receive hands-on training to use SPSS Statistics software, with extensive functionality and time-saving features, and learn to perform an appropriate analysis of your data. Whether you are producing an internal study or intending to publish a paper, this workshop is an important step towards ensuring your research data is well presented.

You will learn:

  • How data (e.g. in a Microsoft Excel worksheet) can be checked for obvious errors and tidied up prior to analysis
  • How a descriptive analysis can be performed using Microsoft Excel (including the use of PivotTables)
  • How data can be transferred to a statistical package (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows) for further analysis
  • How this package can be used to assess whether it is valid to assume a variable has a Normal distribution
  • How SPSS can be used to perform some simple statistical analyses.

Those undertaking or planning to undertake a clinical study or research project will find this training particularly helpful, but anyone with an interest in research and statistics is encouraged to attend.

During the workshop, there will be an opportunity to ask questions, and you are welcome to bring along your own research for comment. Please ensure data is saved to your UHB personal profile or to a UHB SafeStick.

Book your place by emailing qelibrary@uhb.nhs.uk or call on 0121 37(12485). This event is open to all staff and students based at UHB. Places are limited and the workshop is free.
