Fit for the future: a review of the public health workforce

9 December 2015 De Vere Venues Colmore Gate, 5th & 7th Floor Colmore Gate, Birmingham B3 2QD

In a fast moving world, with opportunities for greater devolution, integration of public services to provide more person-centred care, including helping people to stay healthier and new technologies, we need to ensure that our workforce remains equipped to meet the challenge of improving and protecting the public’s health in the future.

Public Health England (PHE) will be working with a range of national organisations such as the Local Government Association, The Royal Society of Public Health, the Faculty of Public Health, the UK Public Health Register, Health Education England, The Association of Directors of Public Health and NHS England, but is very keen to capture local views too. They are holding a number of events around the country between November and January, one in each LGA region/PHE centre area, to enable local leaders to come together to discuss and shape national and local thinking on workforce issues. In particular they wish to examine:

  • What are the key drivers that will shape the context within which we need to protect and improve the public’s health?
  • What might this mean for future skills/capability gaps, and likely trends in the workforce?
  • What do we need to start putting in place now so that the workforce is fit for the future?
  • Are there longer-term trends we need to start planning for immediately?

This event is aimed at:

  • Local authority Chief Executives
  • Directors of Public Health
  • Directors of Adult and Children’s Social Services
  • Other directors to whom this might be relevant (for example Directors of Community/Regeneration etc.)
  • Health and Wellbeing Board Chairs
  • Councillors with Wealth and Wellbeing portfolios
  • Clinical Commissioning Group Chairs and Accountable Officers
  • Senior leaders from organisations representing service users and providers (including the voluntary sector)
  • Public Health England senior staff
  • Local academic leaders
  • Other interested key senior stakeholders e.g LETB Chairs, NHS England Local Directors.
